Cloud Peak Energy

Cloud Peak Energy Inc. was a major American coal mining company that operated three large-scale surface mines in the Powder River Basin: the Antelope and Cordero Rojo mines in Wyoming and the Spring Creek Mine in Montana. As a pure-play thermal coal producer, the company focused on extracting low-sulfur subbituminous coal primarily for domestic electric utilities, at one point generating approximately 4% of the nation's electricity. Beyond domestic sales, the firm operated a logistics segment to facilitate coal exports to Asian markets through terminals in the Pacific Northwest. Following a period of declining demand and financial distress, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019 and subsequently sold substantially all of its operating assets to the Navajo Transitional Energy Company.
