Windows Live is a discontinued brand name for a suite of online services and software applications developed by Microsoft as part of its software-as-a-service platform. Launched in 2005 to extend the Windows user experience, the brand integrated various tools for communication, media sharing, and productivity, including Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail, SkyDrive, and Windows Live Essentials. Its business focus centered on providing a connected ecosystem of web-based and desktop tools that synchronized user data across devices. Between May and August 2012, Microsoft phased out the brand, transitioning most services into the Windows 8 operating system or rebranding them under the Microsoft account and OneDrive ecosystems.
